In 2023, it was Australia’s Ricky Ponting, the legend, who gave Pat Cummins a Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for his win of the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
As captain and player, this year has been a great one for Cummins in both capacities by having some accolades that made him walk away with men’s Player of the Year at ICC Awards that were announced in January.
Upon handover of the award to Cummins by Ponting before their T20 World Cup Super 8 clash with Bangladesh in Antigua on Friday.
In addition to leading Australia to ODI World Cup glory, he also won the World Test Championship and drew an Ashes series in England to retain The Ashes urn.
Across all formats in 2023 Cummins was also ranked as sixth highest wicket taker. In Tests, he came second after Nathan Lyon among bowlers who took most wickets.
Cummins had useful contributions with bat like Edgbaston Test as well as during World Cup games against Afghanistan and South Africa semi-final matches where he played quick cameos.
While presenting the award, Mr Ponting said: “It is my privilege to be here today giving out The ICC Men’s Cricketer of The Year Award 2023. And I would like to say congratulations. Well done buddy, very well deserved… It has been a brilliant year for you personally and your team.”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) shared a video of the ceremony on its Instagram handle.
