After winning the T20 World Cup, India celebrated with a grand parade in Mumbai that brought the city to a standstill. The parade started two hours later due to the crowd chaos since Rohit Sharma and his group arrived at about 5 pm on Thursday.
A viral video shows many slippers thrown away by fans who had gathered in large numbers to watch the victory parade. Along the way of the parade there was disorderly debris and lost footwear.
The team had a breakfast meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi then flew to Mumbai at 3:42 pm after returning from Barbados earlier that morning.
The Wankhede Stadium which saw India win its ODI world cup in 2011, soon became jam-packed with fervent fans only a few minutes after opening time. Around five o’clock when thousands of fans remained outside, because full capacity was reached within a very short span forcing authorities to close gates.
Inside the stadium, they stood under heavy rain and sweat without food or water, determined to celebrate their team’s success. Even though it rained off and on, they stayed put as if there were no problem dancing under speakers blaring songs like “To Brazil” by Vengaboys or unofficial sports anthem such as “Chak de India.”
“Sachin… Sachin…” “Mumbaicha Raja…” “Rohit Sharma!” “India… India…” That’s how supporters were chanting when they took over Wankhede stadium for this game.
Upon arrival at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, this group received water salute there. After that, they went straightway to Wankhede Stadium where roaring crowds embraced them.
