In the middle of celebration, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and the entire Indian squad joined in singing ‘Vande Mataram’ with an enthusiastic crowd.
The atmosphere reminded one of the iconic 2011 ODI World Cup final when Dhoni smashed a six against Sri Lanka to win it while chanting along with his teammates.
This parade which started from Nariman Point ended at Wankhede Stadium causing traffic jams as thousands of people lined up on streets to catch a glimpse of their cricket heroes.
For Rohit who had debuted at only 21 years old as part of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side which made history in 2007; leading his own Indian cricket team that were crowned T20 world champions during their victory lap at Wankhede Stadium was unreal.
A social media viral video had surfaced prior to this victory lap showing Virat Kohli instructing the Indian players to sing ‘Vande Mataram’ alongside the crowd. This raised speculations about Kohli’s intention or not for including this anthem during the win celebrations.
The victorious campaign by Men in Blue earned them Rs 125 crore prize money from BCCI in respect of T20 World Cup.
After helping India clinch its second T20 WC, captain Rohit Sharma and star player Virat Kohli retired from International WT20s.
