Retired English cricket captain Michael Vaughan jokingly alluded to India’s Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja after they announced their retirement from T20 Internationals but whose success in winning white-ball trophies was limited. In the last decade the three have won only one ICC trophy, which is the 2024 T20 World Cup that they won during their last ever T20I appearance.
These three have really been part of Indian cricket for a long period of time. Vaughan highlighted this while admitting that these players still fails to deliver desired results from both their individual performances and as team.
“They’d all say it’s perfect but there should be more white ball trophies among them,” Ryan said on Club Prairie Fire podcast. “Think about it (Rohit), he took another seventeen years before getting another one in his hands I think that might be the first two or three words out of his mouth.”
Kohli became a retired person after he got presented with a player of match award in the world cup final. Just an hour later Rohit made public his decision during a post-match press conference. The pair finished as the top two run-getters in T20Is with Rohit accumulating 4,231 runs ahead of Kohli who had 4,188 runs. Jadeja retired along with them on the following day.
However, even as he criticized Vaughan accepted that by retiring now they may concentrate on other formats especially Indian Premier League.
“Winning at Barbados and having silverware in your hands is not a bad way to retire” “Now Test cricket can come back into focus, play some ODI cricket maybe for a year or so more and then go into IPL like MS Dhoni has done until forever.” And they’re expendable within India cause there are lots of good guys on this side.” He went on
The end of an era in Indian cricket is marked by the exit of Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja from T20Is. In various ways, their contributions have left an indelible imprint on cricket. This will be a legacy that will inspire the next batch of Indian cricketers as they move to Test and ODI formats as well as IPL.
