It is well-known that it was Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar who had recommended MS Dhoni for the captaincy.
However, in 2007, due to his health condition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) offered Tendulkar that captaincy but he refused.
Instead of thinking about himself as captain, master batsman had recommended MS Dhoni’s name by seeing his calmness and decisive power.
In a viral video now, Tendulkar can be seen talking over a stage disclosing why he turned down Team India’s captaincy.
Tendulkar recalls, “So the main reason for me not accepting captaincy was I mean my body was giving me so much trouble. So I remember having this conversation with Mr. Pawar (Sharad) in England, it was before The Oval match and he said you should take over the leadership role if you ask me. I said sir my leadership role as a player will always be there, only the captain tag won’t be there in front of me but whatever in my capacity till I hang up my boots, I will always give my 100% for the country. Let me tell you somebody who is actually a good thinker of the game of cricket. Because being on opposite ends with MS Dhoni all those years from behind him when he batted as wicketkeeper and he did everything else; fielding in slips and that’s how this happened and rest is history.”
T20 World Cup title in 2007; ODI World Cup title in 2011; Champions Trophy title in 2013 apart from which Dhoni led India to being at its height Test Cricket level making him one of the most successful captains ever in Indian cricket history.
