Team India’s Magical T20I Year: A year of unstoppable force

Team India had a tremendous 2024 as they ended their prolonged 11-year drought for an ICC Championship which concluded with a remarkable title victory in the T20 World Cup, which was held in the United States and the Caribbean.
This outstanding achievement also marked the end of a 17-year wait since India’s last T20 World Cup title win which came under magical MS Dhoni’s leadership in 2007.

India also achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first team to clinch the T20 World Cup without facing a single defeat. They secured victories in eight out of their nine fixtures, while their group stage encounter against Canada was abandoned due to rain.
India demonstrated exceptional performance in T20I cricket throughout the year, securing victories in all five bilateral series. Their only setbacks were two defeats, with one occurring against Zimbabwe in Harare shortly after their World Cup triumph, and a loss against Proteas in South Africa.
The world champions commenced 2024 with a commanding 3-0 series win against Afghanistan on home soil. Following their momentous championship victory, they travelled to Zimbabwe, securing a 4-1 win in a five-match series.
Subsequently, they achieved a clean sweep against Sri Lanka with a 3-0 victory in Lankan territory, before replicating the same scoreline in a home series triumph over Bangladesh.
Their final T20I engagement proved challenging – an away series in South Africa, where they competed without their Test squad members. Nevertheless, the team, under Suryakumar’s leadership, demonstrated exceptional performance and clinched the series 3-1.
Their T20I statistics for 2024 were remarkable, with 22 victories from 26 completed matches. Additionally, they emerged victorious in two Super Over deciders following tied matches against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
India’s remarkable performance in 2024 resulted in a 92.31 win percentage, which includes their victories in two Super Over matches. This achievement stands as the highest success rate for any men’s T20I team within a calendar year, surpassing Pakistan’s previous record of 89.47 from 2018, when they secured 17 victories out of their 19 matches.
Sanju Samson had a stellar year in T20Is in 2024, amassing 436 runs in 12 innings at an impressive average of 43.60. His aggressive batting style was on full display, as he maintained a remarkable strike rate of 180.16.
Samson’s ability to dominate bowlers was showcased in his three centuries, making him one of the most explosive and consistent batters in the format.

Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh was India’s standout performer in T20Is for 2024, finishing as the team’s top wicket-taker with 36 wickets in 18 matches. He posted an impressive average of 13.50 and maintained an economy rate of 7.49.
Arshdeep’s best performance came in a World Cup match in New York, where he tore through the USA’s batting lineup, claiming exceptional figures of 4/9. His remarkable form continued in the T20 World Cup, where he was the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, finishing with 17 wickets to his name.
