The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given an “unsatisfactory” rating to the first two matches of the men’s T20 World Cup 2024 held at Nassau County Stadium in New York and a semi-final between Afghanistan and South Africa at Brian Lara Academy, Tarouba.
What is even worse, ICC’s ratings came almost two months after the event during which India beat South Africa in the final match on June 29th in Barbados.
It is interesting that New York’s pitch for India v Pakistan match got a “satisfactory” rating. This meant that India limited Pakistan to score just 113 runs for seven wickets throughout the twenty overs.
The first game of the 2024 T20 World Cup played on June 3rd in New York saw Sri Lankans bowled out by South Africans before they could reach 100 runs. In another encounter, Ireland were all-out for only 96 runs against India who found batting tough as well.
There were several players who got hit body blows due to very uneven bounces; this happened because of very hazardous bounce. Harry Tector of Ireland left feeling pain when he was struck on finger by nasty short delivery from Jasprit Bumrah while Indian captain Rohit Sharma retired hurt after being hit on the upper arm by Josh Little, left-arm pacer from Ireland, for precautionary reasons. Rishabh Pant was also hit by Josh Little.
New York was one of eight USA venues over a fortnight where sixteen games were hosted during this period. These drop-in pitches were made specifically for this event that took just five months’ preparation time and developed by Adelaide Oval curator Damian Hough,
Afterwards, ICC admitted that it had provided substandard pitches for initial games played on New York and said it was striving to remedy such issues before the remaining matches in this tournament are played there. “We have not seen consistent surfaces yet at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Since the finish of yesterday’s game, our world-class grounds team has been working hard to rectify the situation and ensure the highest quality pitch for tomorrow’s match,” said ICC.
The wickets used at Brian Lara Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad where Afghanistan were bowled out for just 56 in 11.5 overs by South Africa were poor and heavily favoured irregular bounce with many batsmen from either side taking knocks as a result.
However, India was able to defeat South Africa after scoring 176/7 in 20 overs during this last game through which ended up with good ratings on the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown pitch; it was rated “very good”. Also, all tournament outfields have received good ratings.
Just after ending its annual conference in Colombo last month, the ICC had revealed that it has established a three-member committee to “review delivery” of the T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies last month. This committee consists of three directors-previous New Zealand batsman Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja who is the deputy chairman of ICC.
