Uganda was resolutely defeated by Afghanistan by 125 runs during its first match. The highlights of the game included Rahmanullah Gurbaz who managed to score 76 runs from as many balls and Ibrahim Zadran, who hit 70 off just 45 balls.
Consequently, they recorded their highest ever opening partnership in a men’s T20 World Cup match and totalled 183/5 after opting to bat first.
Incredible bowling performance from left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi with figures of five for nine was the highlight of the match. Included is a maiden five-wicket haul that took apart the Uganda batting line-up which scored only 58 runs in a combined 16-over innings. Farooqi’s spell played a key role in Afghanistan’s comprehensive victory that showcased his talent plays an important part in their success.
Rashid Khan, Afghanistan captain acknowledged team efforts and maintained it was crucial to remain positive irrespective of oppositions. “We got the start that we wanted as a team. It does not matter whom we play; it is all about mindset. The hardwork we have put in over the last couple of weeks, the way our openers started and especially how our bowlers bowled – it was great team effort altogether.” He added.
Further to this, Farooqi bowled some great deliveries at the top that almost resulted into hat-trick opportunities for him. Though he missed out on taking three wickets in three consecutive deliveries, he remained confident under pressure while making some vital contributions throughout Afghanistan’s win over Uganda. In addition, Farooqi recognized his time playing franchise cricket particularly IPL has come in handy regarding his growth as well as performances on global front.
“I have missed it (getting the hat-trick) a few times (smiles). Something that is not under my control and if I get a chance again, I will try to get that hat-trick,” added Farooqi.
Gurbaz and Zadran established the foundation for Afghanistan’s quick batting during the early overs of their innings. The partnership was characterized by big hitting and effective running between wickets, which was also assisted by Uganda’s fielding mistakes. Also, although they could have scored higher, Uganda managed to restrict Afghanistan to below 200 runs.
Looking ahead, New Zealand presents a significant challenge for Afghanistan as a tough opponent. Skipper Rashid Khan said that going into the next match; it is important that his side plays simple cricket showing how they are prepare for sterner tests in this tournament
