Australia’s batsman Steve Smith who has entered a long-term contract with the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) says he isn’t thinking of retiring from cricket.
According to Reuters, he may play up to four BBL games at home next summer following the final Test against India and before the Sri Lankan tour; having signed a three-year deal with the Sixers.
Smith is still keen on playing all formats despite being omitted from Australia’s squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in America and West Indies.
“Right now, I don’t have any plans; I’m just enjoying playing as such. So this summer I’m looking forward to it”, he told reporters on Tuesday.
“This year, I think that definitely some BBL games are going to come my way and after that we’ll see how it goes. Each chance that comes my way, I grab.”
Smith opened the batting for Australia against New Zealand and West Indies during their most recent home summer after David Warner retired from Tests following the Pakistan series.
In terms of his life average of 56.97, it was nowhere near as good as his 171 runs in eight innings at 28.25 as an opener.
He suggested that though his team mates wanted him back at No 4 where he had spent most of his Test career, Smith wasn’t sure if he would open for Australia in their five-Test series against India starting November 22at Perth Stadium.
He said: “So far everything we’ve been talking about is going over there and then boys get to have T20s or something like that in England so then I’m there for one-dayers then we make a decision from there”.
“There are conversations going on behind closed doors”. You know I saw some comments Usman said something about liking me at number four and Marnus thinks similarly too.
