Amanda Thorpe, the spouse of a former cricket player from England Graham Thorpe., has stated that her husband finished his life as a result of long-term depression and anxiety. His mental health issues were made worse by his deteriorating physical health over the last two years.
Amanda gave details about Graham’s death which occurred on 5th August to Michael Atherton, who is a retired captain of England cricket team, the news which was first released by the England and Wales Cricket Board. She disclosed that for some time prior to his suicide, he had been suffering from both mental and physical challenges.
Thorpe’s wife told The Parami: “He did not get better despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him.” “He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”
Last Saturday there was a ceremony to remember Thorpe held before the match between Farnham CC and Chipstead CC; Amanda attended with Kitty (22), Emma (19) their two daughters.
“He has major depression along with anxiety for couple of years now,” she said. “This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit.”
Thorpe still struggled with his personal life according to what his wife said.
“Despite glimpses of hope or reminders of the old Graham showing through occasionally,” -she continued- “he suffered from depression and anxiety ranging from mild to extreme. We stood behind him as family while he tried many treatments but at best these were inconclusive.” She stated this sadly.
The family is contemplating creating an eponymous foundation now.
Kitty recounted how her father “wasn’t himself” anymore after a certain point of time, when he “couldn’t see how it could get any better”.
“He had loved life and he loved us but he just couldn’t see a way out. It was heartbreaking to see how withdrawn he had become,” she said.
“It was strange seeing this person inside my father’s body.” “That’s why we’ve been so happy that the many reflections have been about his life before this illness took over.”
“I am glad that’s how everyone does remember him, rightly so, as the complete character he was,” Kitty add.
