Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, has always been known for his lively discussions with his teammates and rivals on the field, some of which have been recorded by stump mics (Woods 2018).
During the first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Friday, Rohit was once again engaged in a hilarious exchange of words with Washington Sundar.
The incident happened when Sundar bowled to Dunith Wellalage of Lanka and then asked for LBW after hitting him on the pad.
Sundar, not certain whether the ball had hit Wellalage’s bat or pad first, checked Rahul; wicketkeeper and Rohit at first slip if they desired a review.
Rahul responded instantly saying he didn’t know while Rohit said “What? Tell me. Mere ko kya dekh raha hai. Sab kya main karu tere liye?” (Why are you looking at me? Should I do everything for you?) from where he was standing.
Eventually, Indian players opted out of requesting a review
However intelligent fifties by Pathum Nissanka and Dunith Wellalage saved face for them as they posted a total of 230/8 against accurate bowling by Indian bowlers which dismantled Sri Lankan top-order batsmen early in their innings.
Nissanka batted with concentration on a turning pitch (56 off 75 balls including nine fours) while batting partner Wellalage showed great confidence as he scored an unbeaten 67 from just 65 balls that included seven boundaries and two sixes; however their other colleagues were reluctant to follow suit.
India saw Axar Patel pick up two wickets while Arshdeep Singh also bagged another couple. The others Shivam Dube Mohammed Siraj Kuldeep Yadav as well as Sundar took one apiece.
