After India’s exciting seven-run victory in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, Rohit Sharma’s act of placing the Indian tricolour flag on the ground at Barbados became an iconic moment. The depth of achievement in Rohit’s actions as captain was captured by this gesture.
To commemorate this historic event, Rohit chose to use a photo of him planting his country’s flag at Kensington Oval as his profile picture on his X (formerly Twitter) account. It shows the high spirits and delight that came with India taking home the prestigious championship.
Rohit, however, made a decision to quit playing T20 cricket at 37 after lifting a global title which made him join Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni as just two other successful captains from India.
India under Rohit managed to win 10 consecutive matches including reaching both ODI world cup and World Test Championship finals last year. Nevertheless, despite their impressive run both teams missed out on becoming champions in their respective tournaments.
On Sunday BCCI secretary Jay Shah mentioned that even after his achievements being appointed as captain for limited over formats like ODIs and Tests is still open for consideration where Rohit will be leading India too.
“The next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I have full faith in Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, that we will be champions in these two tournaments,” said Secretary Shah through a video message.
During a breakfast meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rohit disclosed who advised him to dance up to collect the World Cup trophy on the dais.
“It was such a huge thing for us. It was something we were waiting for so long time. Just don’t walk up to the stage players said normally and do something different instead”, he narrated about that experience.
Which led to an outburst of laughter by PM asking whether it had come from Yuzvendra Chahal
It was the idea of Chahal and Kuldeep (Yadav) in fact, Rohit replied.
