Ravi Shastri, a former Indian cricketer and head coach, believes that Rohit Sharma will be considered one of the greatest Indian captains in history after the triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since taking over as captain, Sharma’s leadership traits and strategic abilities have been praised by many in India since he took over from 2021 T20 World Cup.
During Sharma’s reign as captain of India, he has achieved several milestones including reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 world cup finals of the 2023 ODI world cup and winning world test championship. He has effectively introduced an aggressive brand of cricket that is suited to contemporary cricket standards. This shift would not have occurred without his partnership with Rahul Dravid who is currently serving as their head coach.
Sharma’s remarkable captainship continued in the Indian Premier League where he led his team Mumbai Indians to win five titles from 2013 till now. Although comparisons have been made between Sharma and MS Dhoni, however, Sharma has carved out his own individual legacy.
“Tactically, what a man,” said Ravi Shastri. “He’ll go down alongside Dhoni as one of our greatest ever captains. I mean if you ask me who is better I’d say both are on par when it comes to tactics in white-ball game. What MS has achieved in terms of records won’t be forgotten and there can’t be a big credit than this for Rohit,” Shastri was quoted saying on ICC Review.
Ravi Shastri specifically praised Sharma’s performance during the 2024 T20 World Cup, commending his composure and strategic decision-making throughout the final against South Africa.
“And Rohit is not far behind – I thought strategically he was just sensational at this year’s [T20] World Cup… Just being calm, knowing when it was appropriate to use one bowler or another like (Jasprit) Bumrah or (Hardik) Pandya or even Axar Patel was fantastic.”
Sharma’s captaincy skills played a vital role in India bouncing back from behind during the final, showcasing his ability to handle pressure and make decisions that mattered. He has also improved as a batsman, contributing greatly to personal and team achievements.
