The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had offered Rahul Dravid, the outgoing head coach of India’s National team, an extra Rs 2.5 crore bonus because he led his team to win its second T20 World Cup. It was reported that Dravid preferred to receive a similar bonus amounting to Rs 2.5 crore with other staff members.
Beforehand, BCCI had decided that Dravid will be given a bonus of Rs 5 crores, which is the same as the one received by squad players. However, when requesting his bonus amount to be adjusted and harmonized with the other support stuffs’ bonuses of Rs 2.5 crore each, this included bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip and batting coach Vikram Rathore.
“He asked for same funding as others were getting,” claims a BCCI insider.
According to media reports, from Rs 125 Cores prize money allocation by BCCI, each player out of India’s winning squad of fifteen received Rupees Five Crore along with Dravid while their other twenty five colleagues got two point five crore per person including selectors and travelling members.
This is not something new about Dravid equal distribution stand. The previous such case happened in 2018 when he declined higher bonus payments provided for him as the head coach of Indian U-19 world cup winning team; initially, bcci had allocated him fifty lakhs while other support staffs would get twenty lakh rupees each and players thirty lakhs each; dravid requested parity hence causing a revised list where all coaching staffs including Dravid pocketed twenty five lakhs.
Dravids actions show how committed he is to equality and teamwork about it, and these are some key elements that have made his tenure as a coach one that has been defined by integrity and leadership within indian cricket.
