The current head coach of India, Rahul Dravid, until June’s end, has confirmed that his last assignment in the position will be the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies which he won’t re-apply for as reported by Cricbuzz.
“This would be my final one in terms of being responsible,” said Dravid as India gets set to begin the campaign in New York with a game against Ireland on 5th June.
Gautam Gambhir, who used to play with Dravid at India is among those expected to replace him having applied for the job when it was advertised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“And just considering where I am at this stage of my career right now unfortunately as well as what kind of schedules that are available. So yeah, obviously it’ll be my last one,” said Dravid.
“I enjoy doing it. Coaching India is an absolute privilege and I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity working with these guys because they are a fine bunch,” he added.
Gambhir became the frontrunner for KKR’s mentorship role after IPL 2024 when BCCI secretary met Gambhir soon after KKR clinched their third title.
KKR won two Indian Premier League titles under Gambhir’s captaincy: first in 2012 and secondly three years later during 2014 edition. At the start of this year’s IPL season, he joined KKR as their mentor.
He also expressed his interest in taking up India’s head coaching job saying that it would be a privilege for him.
“I would love to coach the Indian team. No bigger honor than coaching your national team. You represent 140 crore Indians and everyone across the globe,” said Gambhir at an event here itself.
