Justin Langer, the head coach of Lucknow Super Giants, had hopes of becoming India’s national coach but his captain KL Rahul made him change his mind and think twice about the huge commitment he was getting into.
Earlier on, Langer mentioned that coaching India would be a great job for him; however, he later withdrew from it.
Langer said in an interview recently that Rahul had informed him that being in charge of Team India is really high pressure work and even marginally more cumbersome than running an Indian Premier League franchise.
“That would be amazing job, [but] I’ve [taken myself out of contention],” said Langer on BBC’s Stumped podcast.
“It’s also all-consuming; I did it with the Australian team for four years and honestly, it’s shattering. And that’s the Australian job!”
“I was talking to KL Rahul and he said ‘You know if you think there’s pressure and politics in IPL team multiply that by a thousand [that’s] coaching India.’ So yeah it was good advice,” Langer revealed.
The likes of former Australian greats Ricky Ponting, Langer Steve Fleming of New Zealand have withdrawn from the race ahead of deadline for applications on May 27 for India head coach role.
Ponting disclosed on Thursday he had been sounded out about becoming cricket chief coach for India but indicated the demands associated with this high-profile position might put him off accepting it.
Ricky Ponting who is 49-year-old Delhi Capitals in IPL cricket coach has also television duties back home in Australia.
