On Friday, Pakistan will play against USA in the opening match of their T20 World Cup campaign, but it is the game against arch-rivals India on June 9 that has got everybody’s eyes fix on.
“Poori duniya iss cheez ka intezar karti hai” (the whole word waits for this), said Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam, on Star Sports about the big game in New York.
Pakistan have lost six of the seven matches they have played against India in T20 World Cup history. But Babar says it boils down to which team holds its nerves better on the day.
The Pakistan skipper said that he used to hear about that while he was growing up and now experiencing it as a player.
“It’s a different kind of pressure, to control the nerves. You learn that from experience, the more you play…especially in Pakistan-India matches. Woh hum pehle sunte te, ab hum khel rahe hain (first we used to hear about it, now we play). That’s a different vibe,” he said.
“This is one of those games where there are always people who thrive under pressure.”
Meanwhile, India started off their campaign with an eight-wicket thrashing of Ireland in New York as part of Group A.
The four teams in Group A are India, Pakistan, Ireland and USA/Canada with only two progressing to the ‘Super 8s’.
