On Monday, Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), reacted to his critics by underlining his attention on generating results and refuting claims that he lacks cricket knowledge.
Naqvi, together with PCB’s COO Salman Naseer and ex-cricketer Waqar Younis revealed plans for improving domestic cricket structure and establishing an advisory committee led by Younis.
A journalist asked a direct question about his understanding of cricket. His answer was succinct and self-assured.
“I am here to deliver; time will show how much I know about cricket. What people say mean nothing to me but you will see the outcome,” Naqvi said during a press conference.
He shared proposals for setting up a six-member advisory board chaired by Waqar Younis to re-engineer the cricket system in order to avoid personal preferences affecting it.
“I am getting former stars in to vet and improve our cricket system and put an end this culture of individual likes and dislikes.” Said Naqvi according to Parami News.
Furthermore, Naqvi also introduced a reframed domestic structure within the constitution guaranteeing stability. To be launched next month, this structure will consist of five teams with 30 players each. These teams will play in first-class games, 50-over matches as well as T20 tournaments which will all be officiated at by retired respected players.
Each team captain would serve for three years alongside ten assistants including coaches while requiring participating contracted officials when available. The heads of teams would be part of the advisory group on cricket under Waqar Younis’ oversight on any cricketing matters.
Waqar Younis has given nod for this new plan because he believes it can boost domestic cricket.
“I will get five legends to head these sides and already I have contacted some of them,” said the ex-Pakistani fast bowler.
Pakistan Team’s performances are what they are after, he noted.
“We have to play good cricket to maintain our brand because cricket is our product. All else should come afterwards,” said Waqar.
PCB has published a full schedule for the men’s senior events for the coming season which will run from September 2024 till August 2025. It consists of 261 matches in all formats: 131 first-class games, 40 fifty-overs and 90 T20s.
Thus Naqvi’s response and plans demonstrate that there is a clear strategy towards developing Pakistan’s cricketing framework aimed at achieving long-term success and stability.
