On Wednesday, Joe Biden, the US President and the Democratic presidential nominee, faced another challenge as Adam Schiff – a major Democrat – urged him to quit running for re-election due to his plans for holding a virtual nomination before the party convention. Schiff’s plea came as Biden was getting ready to address Latino voters in Nevada.
California Representative Adam Schiff has called on Biden to relinquish power, making him one of the most prominent Democrats demanding that Biden steps down. He is also the first high-ranking Democrat to do so following an assassination attempt on his Republican opponent Donald Trump.
He spoke his mind just before Biden delivered a speech in Nevada; Schiff being a key power broker in Congress and Obama Administration. The Senator who will be vying for Senate seat this November became a household name as he led prosecution during Trump’s initial impeachment trial.
Schiff told Los Angeles Times: “A second term of Trump would destroy what our democracy stands for and I doubt if president is capable of defeating Donald Trump in November.”
Calls from within their own ranks for Biden to step aside had abated due to the attack on Trump but are now resurfacing with increased intensity.
Around 20 House Democrats have joined forces with one senator urging their fellow party member not to run against Donald J. Trump again. Nonetheless, Joe Biden is unyielding since he believes that he is stronger than any other candidate against President Trump.
Most recent surveys revealed that Mr. Biden was losing ground slowly vis-a-vis Mr. Trump in tight races with progressive gains among swing states. Meaningful change has not resulted from the debates nor has it occurred in opinion polls following attempt on life of Republican presidential hopeful
Biden defended himself during an interview with Parami News last Monday where he stated that “his mind was still sharp”. One of these interviews, which were aimed at pointing out he can think clearly by doing away with prepared questions shows pundits. He blamed his illness and jet lag for poor debate performance, but his campaign said it is hardly surprising that someone with a long record of political career was prone to gaffes.
Democrats have announced plans to hold virtual nomination for Biden in early August before Democratic National Convention (DNC), slated for 19th August.
Some members of the party opposed the idea of holding a virtual nomination as they claimed that it was an attempt to get their preferred candidate without considering other alternatives. If Biden pulls out, Kamala Harris, who is the Vice President, seems very likely to be chosen by democrats
Party leaders urged delegates to complete the virtual roll-call by August 7, which is Ohio’s deadline for nominating its own run mate for Trump J D Vance.
Although Ohio governor moved back Biden’s deadline, DNC worried this could result in a legal wrangle. An advisory document on voting rules sent by DNC Rules Committee last week and seen by Parami News indicated that there would be no virtual voting prior to 1st of August aiming at final decision next week.
“No one can hurry up us,” according to them. “Our objective irrespective of anything stated is not quick track.”
Media reports say some lawmakers are planning to sign onto a letter opposing the plan while others have expressed reservations about it.
