The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is going back to its previous selection committee system after the recent T20 World Cup experiment sans a chief selector proved to be a failure.
Pakistan were unable to go beyond the group stages, losing both in their matches against the United States of America and India. The PCB feels that it was an underperformance by the team because they did not have a chief selector.
A PTI source said, “The board is likely to return to the old system of having a chief selector with two or three selectors and the captain and head coach not sitting in selection meetings with the selectors.” Wahab Riaz who was involved in the selection committee for T20 World Cup may be announced as the new chief selector.Wahab had been previously serving as national cricket team’s head of selection committee before PCB transformed it into an eight-selector model.
Captain Babar Azam, Head Coach Gary Kirsten, Data Analyst alongside former cricketers such as Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq and Abdul Razzaq were part of this new system.
In addition, Wahab has been seen as Mohsin Naqvi’s mouthpiece at PCB despite also being his Senior Manager for National Team during World Cup. He also served as advisor sports when Naqvi was caretaker Chief Minister Punjab before elections.
The central contracts given out by Zaka Ashraf are also under review across a duration of three years. The source hinted at impending changes for non-performing ones.
