The Indian pacer, Mohammed Shami, has expressed his desire to win the World Cup, having observed his teammates’ recent victory in the T20 World Cup. The Indian team ended an 11-year drought of ICC trophies by defeating South Africa by seven wickets in the final of the T20 World Cup.
Throughout the game, he praised their patience and fortitude as a team and talked about his own perspective on why India did not win the ODI World Cup.
Most importantly, Mohammed Shami said this during a podcast by Shubhankar Mishra when he spoke highly about how well the Indian team performed at the T20 World Cup. The senior bowler also talked about that aura of invincibility that was around them throughout the tournament.” Even in 2023, you wouldn’t have heard anyone say that India will lose,” –Shami commented. “When we had 80 runs in our first ten overs, it felt like we were going to destroy this entire game…when we lost three wickets when chasing to defend against them..so there were no doubts on whether India would or would not win the world cup. But then luck… jo naseeb mai hai uske aage aap jaa hi nahi sakte (you can’t go against what’s been written).”
According to him, Team India showed similar dominance at T20 WC as they did at 2023 ODIs. Reflecting on their unbeaten run from 2023 ODI WC while watching these T20 matches filled me with nostalgia.”
Even in this Word Cup I felt it same way as I had felt sitting outside here whilst on that day one year ago. In 2023 when we won all games for ten consecutive games all other teams were thinking how to beat India. We should pray for such moments,” When you make much out of nothing that’s when confusion and overconfidence sets in. I think the boys showed great patience this time around.”
Mohammed Shami also expressed his admiration for his team’s performances, while reiterating that he himself desired to win the World Cup. This was about how vital it is for all members of a team regardless of what they occupy in the hierarchy.
“I believe who ever took part in that competition and who ever was there with us as team deserved to win it. Today if I am unwell or at home then I will watch the sport only as a fan. These players are my friends and colleagues, so from outside, I can only let them know what I feel and help them improve their game. There is not much we can do about it,” even the winners’ medal – I too dreamt of winning a world cup”.
However, India lost in 2023 ODI World Cup final to Australia despite going through the tournament unbeaten. However, by remaining unbeaten throughout T20 WC campaign, India became first country to lift this trophy.
