Rain ended the match between Washington Freedom and Texas Super Kings at Church Street Park in Morrisville on Tuesday, which was the fifth match of the Major League Cricket season 2024.
The rain stopped their innings when they were at 62 for no loss after just four deliveries; however, when Travis Head and Steve Smith opened for Washington, it seemed as if they would reach the target of 204.
At the end of the rain interruption Travis Head had scored 32 runs off just 12 balls, and Steve Smith was not far behind with his 26 runs in as many balls. The game was abandoned after waiting for almost one hour before it became clear that there was no chance of play resuming due to bad weather conditions. Thus, both teams received a point apiece from this washed out encounter.
This encounter will be mentioned in future since no team has ever crossed over 200-runs mark this season and also no team had reached even a total of 200 runs at Church Street Park.
Earlier, under Faf du Plessis’s captaincy, Texas Super Kings set up an imposing score of 203/5 from their allocated overs. Du Plessis made an outstanding hundred off fifty eight balls which led his side by example. He was backed up by Devon Conway who scored a crucial thirty nine off twenty six balls while together they put on one hundred and nine opening partnership for the first wicket.
Du Plessis went about his business ruthlessly capitalising on any poor deliveries from Washington bowlers throughout his innings. Marcus Stoinis managed to contribute only twenty nine runs in eighteen deliveries despite being cautious about an injury he had sustained on his right hand.
Washington Freedom did not perform very well in their bowling or fielding departments as they dropped many catches and didn’t convert key chances that enabled Texas Super Kings to pile up such a huge total.
Although the rain denied what could have been potentially an exciting finish, both sides can build on their respective displays as they progress in Major League Cricket.
