NEW DELHI: India’s triumphant victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados on Saturday marked the end of a 17-year drought since their last title in the inaugural edition back in 2007. The seven-run win was a hard-fought battle against the first-time finalists.
The Indian cricket team‘s journey to reclaim the coveted trophy has been filled with near misses and heartbreaks over the years. The fans have witnessed their side come tantalizingly close to glory on multiple occasions, only to fall short at the final hurdle.
However, this victory holds a special significance not only because of the prolonged wait but also due to the exceptional performance of the current squad throughout the tournament, reported IANS.
They showcased their dominance on the field and rightfully earned their place as world champions, cementing their names in the annals of cricket history.
Here are the several notable records which India achieved during their remarkable T20 World Cup campaign:

  • India achieved a remarkable feat by securing their second title victory in the prestigious tournament. This triumph places them alongside the West Indies (2012 and 2016) and England (2010 and 2022) as the only nations to have clinched the coveted title on multiple occasions.
  • Virat Kohli‘s stellar performance in the first innings propelled India to a record-breaking total in a T20 World Cup final. His crucial 76-run knock helped India amass 176 runs, eclipsing the previous highest score of 173 set by Australia in the 2021 World Cup finals.
  • Kohli has solidified his position as the greatest batsman in the history of the T20 World Cup. With India’s victory in this year’s tournament, Kohli achieved a unique feat in the world of cricket. He is now the sole player to have won the U-19 World Cup (2008), ODI World Cup (2011), Champions Trophy (2013), and T20 World Cup (2024).
  • Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved a unique feat by participating in all nine editions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He shares this distinction with only one other player, Shakib Al Hasan from Bangladesh. He also became the first player to win the trophy both as a player and as a captain.
  • Rohit’s leadership skills have been exceptional in the T20I format. He has become the first captain in the history of T20 International cricket to secure 50 victories while leading the team.
  • Jasprit Bumrah made history by becoming the first dedicated bowler to be awarded the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup. Throughout the tournament, Bumrah showcased his skills and consistency, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 4.17. This figure stands as the lowest economy rate in a T20 World Cup edition.
  • Kohli’s outstanding performance also earned him the Man of the Match award. Kohli has now surpassed Suryakumar Yadav to claim the record for the most Man of the Match honours in T20I cricket, with an impressive tally of 16.
  • India also achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first team to maintain an unbeaten streak throughout the entire tournament. While Sri Lanka (2009), Australia (2010), India (2014), and South Africa (2024) had previously gone undefeated in the tournament, they all suffered their first loss in the finals. This outstanding performance also led to India setting a new record for the most matches won in a single edition of the tournament, with an impressive eight victories to their credit.
  • Arshdeep Singh demonstrated his value and justified the Indian team’s faith in him in the shortest format of cricket. The young left-arm fast bowler equalled Afghanistan’s Fazhalhaq Farooqi’s record of 17 wickets in the tournament. Singh and Farooqi surpassed the earlier record set by Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga, who claimed 16 wickets in the 2021 tournament.
