The opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 for India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was marked by an impressive achievement at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday.
His performance showed his brilliance and set a new standard for T20Is. Throughout the game, he bowled with mastery that troubled the Irish batters.
After winning the toss Rohit Sharma chose to field first. Bumrah came in to bowl in the fifth over and it was a maiden. By doing this, he now holds more world records than any other player from a Test-playing nation has ever bowled maidens in T20 Internationals.
In reaching this landmark, Bumrah has now bowled 11 maidens in T20Is which is higher than all other players representing full member nations in this format of ICC’s shortest version of international cricket.
Consequently, only two bowlers have sent down more maidens than Bumrah at the highest level of short form cricket: Uganda’s Frank Nsubuga (15) and Kenya’s Shem Ngoche (14).
India’s quartet of fast bowlers were simply terrifying on a wicket offering uneven bounce as well as seam movement resulting in Ireland being bundled out for 96 runs after putting into bat during their opening T20 World Cup match.
Arshdeep Singh (2/35 in 4 overs), Mohammed Siraj (1/13 in 3 overs), Jasprit Bumrah (2/6 in 3 overs), Hardik Pandya (3/27 in 4 overs) gave no chance to Irish batters who looked like novices against swing, seam movement, extra bounce created by the four members attack throughout the period they played – 14 off their allotted sixteen overs.
