India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir asked a question about his relationship with Virat Kohli before the team left for Sri Lanka on tour. Gambhir, although he admitted that it was not for public consumption, wants to see how these two players who have had a lot of disagreements in the past can work together.
Ashish Nehra, meanwhile, is a former Indian cricketer and knows both Gambhir and Kohli as teammates from their domestic cricket days. He feels doing things as one is different from playing against one another in different teams when trying to achieve something collectively. There are so many players such as Gambhir and Kohli who have several fights between them but still they played together for a team meaning they remained a player, coach-captain, coach and senior player” stated Nehra (‘Sports Tak’).
“Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are very determined personalities. They’re known to perform wonders for their teams while playing against any opposition. At the same time, when being in the same locker room with other members of their side, they are united there for the sake of their squad. You’re talking about Kohli who comes with 16 or 17 years of experience; even Gambhir has been around forever. What happens outside people get wrong impressions,” he added.
This happened at IPL between Gautam Gambhir and Kohli prior to this year’s edition where former was mentoring Lucknow Super Giants.
According to the recent interviews held by the newly appointed Indian cricket team’s coach, winning should be more important than anything else and that both him and his captain realize that at least Gambia does.
“What kind of relationship I share with Virat Kohli? It is matured one between two adults. Good for TRP may be good but not publically,” said Gombir during media interaction ahead of team’s departure. “You play on behalf of your team; you fight for your team and win; that is what we want. People have the right to fight for their team, for their jersey and then they would like to enter a dressing room where they are all winners”
According to Nehra, Gautam Gambhir is just someone who does not mince with his words when it comes to work.
“Gambhir speaks his mind which is very transparent. It’s good! Keep it clear and speak out. That’s very important. Yes, I agree everybody has got his own style of operation as coach, captain and player, but still there is no problem in these two as well as where they are in their career,” Nehra stated.
Kohli will be a part of the Indian ODI squad on the tour of Sri Lanka after being rested during South Africa series while he will be available for T20I series starting from July 27th for 3 games.
