In readiness for the Men’s T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled an initiative. Noted Grammy award-winning composer Lorne Balfe has written a new anthem and music piece which will be played at all ICC world events to be song.
This sonic brand of the ICC embodies cricket in its three formats Test, ODI, and T20Is. The project had been undertaken by Balfe who is a renowned composer of soundtracks for films and television shows like “Mission: Impossible”, “Black Widow” and “Top Gun: Maverick”.
The first time this new anthem will be heard is during the opening game of the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup between USA and Canada in Dallas, Texas on June 1st, 2024.
Recorded at London’s iconic Abbey Road Recording Studios, this composition uses orchestral instruments as well as cricket equipment together with in-game sounds to produce an immersive soundscape. It conveys pregame jitters for showdowns, elation after triumphs, as well as happiness when one lifts a trophy.
This anthem honors cricket culture’s rich tapestry attracting enthusiasts through different channels during ICC events across nations.
According to Balfe himself there was nothing about him leading such a milestone but he believed that it sums up everything that cricket stands for.
“It has truly been an amazing experience working with ICC on composing their new anthem. The melody is one of unity. Lorne attempts to capture every boundary hit or wicket taken within this beautiful sport slow-paced over many years,” he revealed.
Chris Tetley who is the head of events at the ICC said that he was happy with their efforts while emphasizing how much they strove to match excitement on field with whatever they were putting out musically.
“This unique project represents our sense of pride. We’ve worked towards creating a completely new sonic brand identity and it took several months before we could bring everything together into its final form,” commented Tetley.
“We want people to think of cricket whenever they hear it, and it should take them on an emotional journey through the ups, downs, expectations and successes that are associated with the game” he also said.
Enhancing sound experience for cricket lovers all over the world is part of ICC’s goal as seen in the partnership with COOL Music Ltd.
