Following his derogatory remarks about Arshdeep Singh, the Indian fast bowler, that attracted wide public outrage, a former Pakistani cricket player called Kamran Akmal has apologized openly. These comments made during a panel discussion on ARY News were considered disrespectful as well as improper and therefore drew strong reactions especially from Harbhajan Singh, a former spinner for India.
His inappropriate remark in relation to Arshdeep’s religion during India’s high-pressure match with Pakistan whereby Arshdeep happened to bowl the last over was instantaneously criticized.
Akmal had remarked “Kuch bhi ho sakta hai…12 baj gaye hai (Anything can happen. It is already 12)” in the video reposted by Harbhajan Singh. This statement was seen as an insult towards Sikhs.
Therefore, Akmal took to social media platform X in order to apologize for his actions.
“I deeply regret my recent comments and sincerely apologise to Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful. I have the utmost respect for Sikhs all over the world and never intended any harm. Truly sorry #Respect #Apology,” wrote Akmal
Before this, Harbhajan Singh condemned Akmal vehemently indicating that he was not happy concerning what he had said.
“Lakh di laanat tere Kamraan Akhmal.. You should know the history of Sikhs before you open your filthy mouth. We Sikhs saved your mothers and sisters when they were abducted by invaders, the time invariably was 12 o’clock. Shame on you… Have some Gratitude” – X
This exchange highlights how sports commentary needs to be treated with care so as not to offend any cultural or religious contexts involved. Thereby, through his apology, Akmal owns up to causing pain and tries mending ties with both Sikh community worldwide and other people at large who felt hurt.
