As per the update from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene has currently been downgraded to Category 1 and its maximum sustained winds are 75 mph (120 kph).
The system was moving from Florida northwards to Georgia where it was some 100 miles (160 kilometers) to Augusta and 40 miles (65 kilometers) to Macon, with a speed of some 30 mph (48 kph)- the center said in an update at 4 am.
Reporting in the us National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene made its landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida on thursday late as a Category 4 storm. The ‘very dangerous’ hurricane with a maximum wind of 140 mph flooded large residential sections in the area and led to power outages in the region for it was the strongest storm which bothered the south east area.
The eye of hurricane Helene, made landfall near the mouth of the Aucilla river at 11:10 pm eastern daylight time (0310 UTC) as confirmed by the US National Weather Service with Doppler radar.
In south Georgia, as tropical storm Helene relocated the deadly winds a tornado materialized and three people were reported dead. More than 70 possible shelters were offered to the people living in Franklin, Taylor, Liberty, and Wakulla counties.
The storm affected over 885,000 households and businesses in the state of Florida and contributed to power outages for another 29,000 households in the states of Georgia and North Carolina. Officials further noted that repairs made to the power grid may take days or even weeks before it is fully restored to normal electricity supply.
Power Blackouts or Supply Cuts affected about more than 885000 Florida residences and commercial properties, other than this Georgia and North Carolina suffered additional cutoffs.
As reported by the NHC, Helene was rapidly upgraded into a CATEGORY 4 hurricane on Thursday, August 30.
