Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has opened up about his recent struggles with form, hopeful for a turnaround following a challenging season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League and a slow start at the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Maxwell could only manage 52 runs from ten IPL matches and has so far scored a meagre total of 39 runs in four games played in this year’s World Cup before finding it hard to build or maintain momentum.
“Still feeling really good. I’ve been hitting the ball pretty well, but… it’s just been really hard to, I suppose, get that rhythm and momentum. You’ve seen our openers go out there and pump it all over the place, and then in the middle order, it’s been quite difficult to adjust”, Maxwell said as quoted by ANI.
On ESPN’s Around The Wicket program he shared his views on these issues further explaining why batting in the middle can be daunting unlike opening where it is easy.
Maxwell also highlighted teammate Marcus Stoinis for his consistent performance at this crucial stage of qualifying matches for Australia during this stage of the tournament.
“The only one throughout the tournament who has consistently smashing them is Stoin – he’s been outstanding. To have those guys below me gives me a lot of confidence, knowing I have a bit of time to get myself into the tournament, and we’ve got some real quality below us. It’s a nice position to be in that I don’t feel like I’ve fully hit my straps played pretty well against England… but I know it’s not far away”, added Maxwell
Additionally Mitchell Marsh has faced his own challenges including an injury sustained during IPL 2024 when he tore hamstrings. However Marsh remains a mainstay across formats for Australia always offering much needed support whenever active on field.
“Mitch has been unbelievable over the last couple of years since he’s come back into all three formats, especially the Test stuff. I think that’s probably filter into the confidence in the other two formats. Watching him go about his work, you always know he’s only one or two shots away from basically ruining a game (for the opposition), and we are looking forward to seeing that”. Maxwell said.
Australia goes into their first Super 8 match with Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda unbeaten so far in this tournament.
