The appointment of the ex India captain as the next Indian head coach has gained momentum after Kolkata Knight Riders clinched their third IPL title under Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship.
After his recent remarkable performance in the IPL, Gambhir’s name for the highest position in cricket is doing rounds.
Gambhir was floated around to become the next India head coach by BCCI secretary Jay Shah who had met him after KKR’s victory over SRH on Sunday.
A new article published by Cricbuzz now reveals that Gambhir’s appointment is almost certain and negotiations are ongoing on multiple fronts.
“If you ask an IPL franchise owner, who is also very close to top brass of BCCI, he’ll tell you that it’s almost a done deal as far as Gambhir is concerned,” said a high-profile IPL manager. “I have heard people say that they are trying to get hold of him.” The point about negotiations still being held between two parties – or possibly more – comes out here (Cricbuzz).
Jay Shah, however, during a media briefing recently dismissed rumors linking various retired Australian cricketers with Team India coaching job and dropping hints about finding an Indian to fill up Dravid’s boots because such person should know ‘inside out’ how cricket system operates across this country.
Dravid has told the board he is not interested in serving another term while Australia’s Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer claimed they were approached but turned down offers for what they described as the famous seat in One Day International cricket.
BCCI general secretary Jay Shah denied reports suggesting that Rahul Dravid could be replaced by any Australian cricketer. “We have neither contacted nor made offers to any former player from Australia’s national team,” he said releasing an official statement completely disregarding all charges against them.
“This buzzword ‘desh ke liye karna hai’ has become a popular phrase among those choosing India’s coach.” For India and Gambhir, the belief is that ‘we must do it for the country.’ It has been understood this conversation between Jay Shah and Gambhir had centered on this idea, claims Cricbuzz.
