Former Australian test cricketer Michael Slater’s bail application was denied by the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday after being charged for 25 offenses, including choking, stalking and assault four and a half months ago.
He has been in custody since then.
The former Australian Test player is accused of choking a woman at his home in December 2023 and sending her abusive texts. He allegedly took hold of her arms and forced her back.
“The allegation is that it caused restriction to her breathing and bruising to her neck,” AAP quoted Justice Paul Freeburn as saying.
The row started when the lady visited Michael Slater’s residence to return his dog. According to the court, this fifty-four year old has been told he had alcohol use disorder previously. Furthermore, the court also heard that he had suffered from mental health issues before.
Justice Freeburn said: “It’s not just about how serious these offences are but also how many there are and how often you do them”. He added that Slater’s criminal record contained other matters relating to domestic violence.
The court dismissed an application for bail because it cannot ignore the fact that there remains a possibility of further offending by Michael Slater given his previous breaches of bail conditions as well as non-compliance with domestic violence orders.
“We have no reason to believe if he were released on any set of conditions such as refraining from contacting anyone in Sydney or elsewhere that Slater will act in line with those rules”, commented Justice Freeburn.
