After losing the 2nd ODI, Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has emphasized the importance of the upcoming 3rd and final ODI against Sri Lanka.
This is a match where India sees it as one of the crucial opportunities for them to adapt and overcome challenges posed by spin bowling during difficult conditions. This experience is deemed beneficial in preparation for the forthcoming Champions Trophy next year.
Indian team faces a possibility of their first bilateral ODI series loss to Sri Lanka in 27 years after being beaten by 32-runs in the second ODI, mainly due to batting lineup’s inability to effectively handle Sri Lankan spinners.
“In such situations it is an opportunity for us to go out there and put our hands up and win those critical situations. Obviously with big tournaments coming up we will be in similar situations and it will be important to find ways as to what we can do to win those critical situations especially in similar conditions against quality spin attack,” he said quoted Parami News.
Sundar stated his optimism about how his team will have better judgment when faced with such kind of situation and thus made it clear that they should learn from this series so that they could improve on their performance.
“I think whatever we have done in this series so far, we will take that as a learning, obviously try and move ahead and win the game tomorrow in all aspects of the game. We are quality players of spin, matter of finding a way.” He added.
On top of that, Sundar cited some tactical changes underlined by Gautam Gambhir who was appointed as their head coach recently considering his expertise against spinners.
“It’s important for me to do well with bat, contribute towards team success more importantly win games especially batting whenever I get an opportunity. I feel like I had two good opportunities already this series and yes just looking forward to get the job done for my team especially with the bat especially when we’re chasing and the chips are down,” said all-rounder.
Sundar, who previously had a match-winning performance in a T20I against Sri Lanka, is enthusiastic about capitalizing on opportunities to put points on the board for his team especially with the bat during crucial times of this game.
“Doing something that will help me be successful as well as an asset to my team that’s something I always try and work hard for. So while thinking about my bowling there were certain things which I needed to do, slightly different, not huge changes but just to add a couple of more things and do certain things more often and more efficiently,” Sundar told reporters on the eve of the final ODI game.
