Rohit Sharma, who is known for his quiet nature and ability to think tactically, said that it is important to have transparency in communication with each member of the team so that roles and expectations are clear. An open dialogue creates an enabling environment where players feel appreciated and stimulated to perform at their best.
According to Rohit, any captain’s most difficult task is getting every player understand one another.
“When you step out as a captain, you always have different types of characters; everyone has got his own mindset and there are some demands. What I can do as a captain is take everything,” he said on Star Sports.
“What someone brings before you, listen carefully and give them whatever they want from you. That’s why as a captain I am not preparing myself alone but also as a player,” Rohit added.
A little different approach toward leading the team was clearly stated by Rohit.
“My style of captaincy is slightly unorthodox because I rely more on statistics or numbers which helps me analyze things better. In situations like these I spend long periods in meeting rooms anticipating certain scenarios that could arise during matches. It’s basically nothing for the player himself but for me because I should know about them when they come up in the game and answer them,” he disclosed.
This’s how I prepare when going through everything else; if there are important bits to share with my teammates then we’ll have that discussion together but if it isn’t necessary then nope. However, major information gathering needs to be done by me about what kind of pitch this is, what sort of opposition am against here and how they’ve been playing lately.”
The T20 format keeps on changing while every player plays differently either. Their style has always been understood first so that our bowlers know what tactics need to be adopted against them.” Basically reduce messages before passing on intelligentes.
