Cricket Australia extends Andrew McDonald's contract as head coach

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced the extension of Andrew McDonald‘s contract as the Head Coach of the Australian men’s team until the end of 2027. McDonald, who has been in the role since 2022, has led the team to significant achievements, including an ICC World Test Championship, an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and retaining the Ashes in England.
Currently, Australia is ranked as the No.1 Test team and No. 2 in ODI and T20 cricket. The extension will see McDonald lead the team through several major tournaments, including the next World Test Championship, the one-day Cricket World Cup in 2027, the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and the 2024 Champion’s Trophy. Additionally, the period includes 13 months of Test cricket in 2026-27, featuring series against India and England, and the 150th anniversary Test at the MCG.
Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia, praised McDonald’s performance, saying, “Andrew has proven to be an outstanding men’s head coach who as well as delivering exceptional results has built a strong coaching team, methodology and an excellent environment for the team to perform at its best. We are delighted to extend his tenure for a further two years.”
Andrew McDonald expressed his gratitude for the extension and highlighted the teamwork within the squad. He said, “I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches, and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success and development of this group.”
Ben Oliver, Executive General Manager of National Teams, also commended McDonald’s contributions, stating, “Andrew has created a performance environment that resonates strongly with the playing group and has produced some outstanding results.”
The announcements were made during a media availability session at the MCG.
