Praising Jasprit Bumrah as a “world-class bowler,” left-arm spinner Axar Patel spoke after India’s 47-run victory over Afghanistan to open the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup.
Their win in the Caribbean demonstrated the might and depth of their team’s bowling attack.
Axar Patel stressed that Indian cricket squad is self-assured about their bowlers’ skills under pressure. He mentioned the experience of Bumrah, who is considered one of many high-quality bowlers in Team India.
“Look, obviously Jasprit Bumrah is a world-class bowler, so you know when you’ve got really good bowlers on your side like we have – we can get out from any sticky situation,” Axar said in post-match interview.
Patel also noted that Paras Mhambrey, the bowling coach for India, leaves Bumrah’s tactics alone. He observed that Mhambrey has confidence in Bumrah’s ability to make decisions and prefers him not to be interfered with while playing.
“I don’t think anyone talks much about Bumrah’s bowling. He has an idea of what to do and what not to do. So I think when it is going so well, I don’t think the bowling coach is giving so much input that there is some confusion in his mind. He just says that you are doing well, whatever thinking you are doing is also going well. So, I think, as much as I have seen, the bowling coach doesn’t interfere much. He says this during planning that whatever your mindset is, it is clear, so just execute your plans,” Axar added.
The outcome was indeed indicative of India’s flexibility on field and strong points in terms of their bowlers who were key contributors throughout these tournament games unfoldings.
India will play Bangladesh next at Trent Bridge on Saturday in their second Super 8 match.
