India will be represented by the current javelin throw champion, Sumit Antil and a successful shot-putter, Bhagyashri Jadhav when they carry the flag for their country at the Paris Paralympics 2024 opening ceremony. This was announced on Friday evening during a farewell party organized for India’s team that will participate in the global event.
The same places that hosted the Olympics which ended on 11 August in French capital, will also host the Paralympic games from August 28 to September 8.
For these Games, India is sending its largest ever contingent with 84 athletes. Just last month, this figure stood at 54 during Tokyo edition.
Sumit won the Para Athletics World Championships held in May after triumphing over all other male participants in men’s Javelin Throw F64 category whom he also overcame to claim gold in Rio De Janeiro two years earlier.
He is only aged twenty five and holds a world record of seventy meters eighty three centimeters (F64) at men’s javelin. In that championship season Sandeep won gold throwing a distance of seventy meters eighty three centimeters (F64).
In what was his personal best mark so far, Antil bettered his previous performance by throwing as far as seventy three point two nine meters to win another golden medal during Asian Para Games in Hangzhou China.
At the most recent Asian Para Games which were held in Hangzhou city where China emerged as overall winners, Bhagyashri finished second after participating in women’s shot put f34. She managed to get seventh place when she contested at Tokyo Paralympics too.
This year May saw Bhagyashri pick up another silver medal for Women’s Shot Put F34 from para Athletics World Championships again.
