There have been no conversations about the captain including himself again in the limited overs squads but in the case of Brendon McCullum becoming a new head coach he is open to such a possibility, noted England Test skipper Ben Stokes.
McCullum’s position featured him as head Coach of all three formats, having taken over from Matthew Mott who served as the limited-overs coach July I as head coach of the two year tenure where the white and red teams were coached by different coaches at the same time.
Come January when England visits India, the New Zealand will be in charge of the limited-overs teams.
Ben Stokes has mostly been peripheral in the whiteball teams for England but since McCullum became the head coach in May 2022 he has been playing most of the matches in the test side.
This was last played in November 2022, which was during the final of the T20 world cup. He had announced his ODI retirement, and then came back just in time for the ODI world cup last year.
Stokes was quoted as saying on Sky Sports on Tuesday, “I’ve done a lot of white-ball cricket for England and have had a fair bit of success and I am very much happy and satisfied with what I have done in that format of the game…” as per Reuteurs.
“Of course, if I get the call to come and play it would be definite yes. But in any case, I am not going to be too disappointed if I don’t – it means that I can just sit back and watch everyone else go out and smack it.
“Me and Baz (McCullum) have not spoken about anything like that whatsoever.”
Ben Stokes has been out of action since tearing his left hamstring during Northern Superchargers’ match in The Hundred last month. The 33-year-old mentioned that he had a smooth recovery process and could wait for a scan on Wednesday.
“In terms of bowling, there’s a lot more than just my hamstring that needs to be back firing – you know you use everything,” he added. “I need to get that all right to make sure that I don’t do any further damage on any other modified parts of my body.”
