Assam Cyclone Remal had left ferries lying idle in the aftermath of the storm in Kamrup District on May 29, 2024.
Three people died during incessant rains triggered by Cyclone Remal that led to increased water levels across Assam rivers on May 30th, including at least two in Cachar and one in Karimganj district who were among the 41,719 affected people.
Trains from southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur to Silchar via Lumding came to a halt because roads and rail tracks got damaged.
The floods have disastrous effects on eight districts namely Nagaon, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong. Cachar; Karimganj; Hojai; Golaghat; West Karbi Anglong.
Landslides occurred in 11 villages of Dima Hasao, three of Cachar and one of Hailakandi. Heavy erosion was also reported from Silchar and Udharbond in Cachar district.
Barak river and its tributaries Longai, Kushiara, Singla, Katakhal were flowing above danger level at many points in karimganj, cacharand hailakandi.
Karimganj suffered most with twenty six thousand four hundred thirty people affected. Yet there are still more than eight thousand three hundred fifty one others adversely impacted.”
