Abrar Ahmed, who is a Pakistani leg-spinner, has announced his intention to be the frontline spinner for the country before the two-match Test series against Bangladesh on 21st August in Rawalpindi.
He was selected in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad, but he did not appear in any of the matches. His last international match was a test with Sri Lanka in July 2023 held at Colombo. The forthcoming two test Matches against Bangladesh offers Abrar an opportunity to prove his worth and cement his place within the Test team.
During a Thursday’s press conference, Abrar Ahmed articulated his firm resolve thus; “I am trying to become the main spinner of the team.” Moreover, he hinted that he might have developed new deliveries by saying ‘’In terms of deliveries I try and do something different and it could reflect in the upcoming games’’
So far, Abrar’s international career has been limited. The next series becomes significant as it will give him an opportunity to show good performance before national selectors who may consider including him into 2025 ICC Champions Trophy Pakistani lineup.
Although he highlighted that champions trophy is essential, Abrar stressed on consistency when performing by saying “It is up to team management whether I play in champions trophy or not. On my end, I have to work hard.”
The second test match will be played without supporters between August 30th – September 3rd at Karachi. Accordingly, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said they were unable to allow fan entry because National Stadium of Karachi was under renovation during this period.
These series will determine Abrar’s readiness for international cricket.Needless to say, if he can successfully bring his domestic performances on a bigger stage and establish himself as dependable spin option; such aspect will greatly influence Pakistani bowling attack. The series against Bangladesh provides both individual milestones as well as playing a major role towards Pakistan winning tests where Abrar should shine.
