Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s short-term government, will be travelling to Rangpur district on Saturday to meet with the family members of Abu Sayed. He was a youth whose murder in police firing during protests against reservation provided a push for a students’ movement across Bangladesh.
According to the press wing of the chief advisor’s office, his visit has been confirmed.
The 9th born out of 9 siblings and only 20 years old student at Begum Rokeya University, Sayed was killed on July 16.He became an overnight celebrity when a photograph emerged showing him surrounded by policemen with his hands stretched out wide in front of them empty-handed.
On arrival in Dhaka after staying about Hailing Sayed from Thursday, Yunus described him as ‘an extremely brave young man who faced a gun and led to this revolution’.In addition, he stressed that people would always remember him. “This wind of freedom has to reach every house or else this freedom is no meaning; being free means that everyone has to change,” he told reporters.
However, Hasina visited the places which were destroyed by protesters but not those families who lost their loved ones as a result of demonstrations which had drawn widespread criticism.
