India’s new batting prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal is close to creating a new record in the ongoing 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC). As the India team prepares to take on Bangladesh with a two-match Test series from September 19 in Chennai, Yashasvi has set his sights on a very impressive target.
The 22-year-old has already accumulated 1,028 runs in this WTC cycle and this makes him 132 runs shy of becoming the Indian batter with the highest number of runs in a single edition of the WTC.
The current record is held by India’s Ajinkya Rahane who accounted for the most runs, 1,159 during the 2019-21 WTC cycle.
To achieve this, Yashasvi will break Rahane’s record.
It is worth mentioning that besides Rahane, Yashasvi is the third Indian player to have crossed the 1000 runs mark in a WTC cycle with India caption Rohit playing a part as well for the same.
Currently however, he finds himself at number two on the ll times scoring list for WTC 2023-25 tied England’s Ben Duckett at 1,028 runs.
But he still stays 371 runs behind Joe Root who leads with 1,398 runs.
Yashasvi made his test debut in 2023 against west indies in Sparta Losau and has played 9 test innings scoring 1028 runs at an impressive average of 68.53.
He has scored 3 centuries, 4 half-centuries and 2 double centuries in his career.
As of now, India stands atop the WTG standings with a points percentage of 68.52.
The WTC program after the Bangladesh series includes three Tests at home against New Zealand, followed by a tough five Test series in Australia.
With Pakistan just coming off a historic 2-0 whitewashed victory, Bangladesh will undoubtedly provide stiff competition.
They won the first Test by 10 wickets and then went on to win the second Test by 6 wickets thus becoming the only team to clinch a Test series in Pakistan against their hosts.
