Yashasvi Jaiswal had a terrible time in the field on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The India opener squandered three chances in the field and brought about strong reactions from his teammates in frustration.
LIVE: India vs Australia 4th Test
The three instances allowed Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins to bat on. Khawaja went on to score 19 runs more while the full impact of Labuschagne and Cummins’ reprieves is not known with both unbeaten going into the Tea break. At the end of the session, Australia were 135/6 with a 240-run lead.
The first drop came in the third over of Australia’s innings, when Jasiwal missed a tough chance at leg gully to dismiss Khawaja, who was on 2. Reacting to the sharp catch, Jaiswal struggled to react quickly to Khawaja’s powerful flick.
In the second, with India gaining inroads on the Australian batting and applying pressure, Jaiswal allowed the only remaining batter Labuschagne to continue.
Batting at 46, Labuschagne tried to steer an Akash Deep delivery. In what seemed like catching practice, the ball flew straight to Jaiswal at gully who failed to latch on. Rohit Sharma, stationed at first slip, didn’t shy away from letting his frustration known.
It got worse for Jaiswal couple of overs later. Cummins, on 20 at the time, made a defensive prod forward and Jaiswal, at silly point now, didn’t get his hands in time and another chance went begging. Rohit, this time, remained tight lipped but his annoyance with the teammate was quite evident.
Labuschagne and Cummins have carried the hosts from 91/6 to 135/6 at Tea, building a 44-run stand in the process.
