WTC standings: Draw in Gabba leaves India, Australia's fates in balance
The third Test between India and Australia finished without a result with rain affecting all five days of the contest in Brisbane. (AP)

The Brisbane Test between Australia and India ended in a draw due to persistent rain, leaving the World Test Championship final race wide open. The unpredictable December weather in Brisbane thwarted both teams’ attempts to secure a victory on Wednesday.
India needed 275 runs to win after Australia declared their second innings at 89/7, aiming for a thrilling finish. Bad weather interrupted play after India reached 8/0 in their second innings.

Australia’s declaration gave India a minimum of 56 overs to chase the target and take a 2-1 series lead. Earlier, India were bowled out for 260 in their first innings.
Akash Deep was the final wicket to fall for India in the first session. Australia then looked to score quickly when the weather improved.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Deep bowled effectively, restricting the Australian batters. Australian captain Pat Cummins declared shortly after his own dismissal for a brisk 22.
Persistent rain led to the abandonment of play after tea.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series remains level at 1-1. Each team received four points towards World Test Championship qualification.

South Africa currently lead the WTC standings with 63.33 percent. They are in a strong position to qualify for the final in June 2025.
Australia and India remain close contenders, with the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the New Year’s Test in Sydney still to come.
The drawn Test match in Brisbane has intensified the competition for a place in the WTC final. The weather played a significant role, preventing either team from gaining an advantage.
