In light of the above mentioned, one has to appreciate the way Indian captain Rohit Sharma feels ‘very fitted’ playing 4 more years at ODI level despite winning T20 world cup around 3 months back. Although we knew those games were a little too much for the team and out of those games, 1 T20 game, the management insisted that “one can resign from T20I Internationals conveniently”.
Rohit is undeniably 37 years old and scope of amazement to any cricket lover is engaging and spectacular ovation of applause in this satge of his admirable career span. One such baton was passed to Indian cricket teams rather talented batsman Suryakumar Yadav who not only plays T20 but all formats of the games.
Young opener Shubman Gill has been given the captaincy of India in limited over formats quite recently and looking at him being made the captain of Gujarat Titans only makes sense that he has been seen as a potential future Indian captain for quite some time now.
However, Captaincy is not merely about scoring runs. Allrounder Hardik Pandya has also suffered a setback in terms of captaincy. Losing as the captain of the Mumbai Indians last season and also BCCI selectors which is more of a concern about his fitness made him lose his appointment of the T20I captaincy for India to Suryakumar.
It is understandable that all the players with the potential to become a good leader in the future have been selected. However, it will be interesting to see who is ready to replace Rohit, who according to the commander in chief of the Indian cricket board will meet the requirements for leadership of the team in all three competitions.
This past week on the episode of Cricbuzz’s show ‘heyCB’ in which former wicketkeeper for India Dinesh Karthik was made to answer a fan problem saying ‘who would be blueprint for captaincy in all 3 formats for india in the future? The answer was necessary to say his two,”There are a couple of young players who straight away come in my head who are young, have the potential and most definitely can lead india in all the formats in the very near future. One, Rishabh Pant Two, Shubman Gill.” You’ll see why these two deserve and are especially capable of having the hopes of the team on their shoulders.
“They both are international captains and play for IPL franchises owned teams. Earlier, when they have donned the blue jersey, they have also captained. In due course, I do believe they do have that opportunity where they can be the captain cybers for India also,” he added.
This June, after his dreadful vehicle accident in December 2022, Pant returned to play competitive cricket for the IPL. Then, he quickly returned to ODIs and T20s, and is now preparing for his return to Tests with selection for the initial Test of the home Test series against Bangladesh at the end of September.
