In the red-ball leg of South Africa’s tour of the Caribbean, the home team suffered a 1-0 defeat in the two-Test series that was part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle. The Windies now seek to maintain their impressive form in the T20I format, having emerged victorious in four out of their last five bilateral T20I series.
During the T20 World Cup earlier this year, co-hosts West Indies narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot after being defeated by South Africa.
“Facing a strong South Africa side is an excellent opportunity for our team to reset and refocus with our game plan,” Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket with CWI said, as quoted by ICC.
“We have played them recently and had mixed results, so this should be an exciting and important series. I am confident in the squad we have selected, and with eyes already on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know the guys will be keen to show their hunger for success.”
The West Indies team will be missing the services of experienced all-rounders Russell and Holder. Russell had requested time off for rest and recovery, while Holder has been given a break after playing in five consecutive Tests against England and South Africa.
However, the squad has been bolstered by the inclusion of Alick Athanaze, who impressed during the recent Test series, and young fast bowler Matthew Forde, who last represented the team in the bilateral series against South Africa in May.
The South African team had previously announced their squad for the three-match T20I series, which is scheduled to take place from August 24 to 28.
West Indies T20I squad: Rovman Powell (c), Roston Chase (vc), Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Fabian Allen, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd
