On Monday, the Indian cricket team departed for Sri Lanka tour from Mumbai immediately after Gautam Gambhir’s first press conference as Team India head coach.
This will be followed by a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka, starting on July 27th and culminating on August 7th.
Afterwards, the national selectors announced that Suryakumar Yadav will serve as the T20I captain with Shubman Gill being his deputy in both ODIs and T20Is. In addition, Hardik Pandya lost the vice-captaincy in both formats.
Moreover, they managed to bring along Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who had earlier retired from T20 International cricket so that they could participate in the three ODIs against Sri Lanka.
Ravindra Jadeja has been left out of the ODI squad since he had also declared his retirement from international Twenty-20 cricket immediately after the world cup. Reflecting upon this matter during his media briefing, Gambhir stated that it was just fatigue which prompted him to rest Jadeja for some time before travelling to Sri Lanka.
“However, there are ten Test matches coming up and we need somebody like Ravindra Jadeja very important,” remarked Gambhir.
Consequently, Riyan Parag is present in both teams while Shreyas Iyer who was dropped from central contract earlier in year following failure to play domestic games has been recalled to squad.
