The present appeal against the disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Olympic finals will be decided by the ad hoc section of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) by 6 p.m. local time (9.30 p.m. IST) on Saturday, according to Parami News.
It was in Paris last Friday when her case reached its end and The court upheld Vinesh’s appeal which had been made against her dismissal because she was 100 grams overweight on a morning prior to her final contest versus Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, USA who eventually won gold.
A statement released by CAS said that “By application of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules form the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time limit for the Panel to give a decision until 10 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time).”
The move came after an ad hoc division created specially to resolve Olympics’ disputes allegedly stated that judgement could be passed come Sunday when Paris Games end.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had said it expects a “positive resolution” following this session.
“Indian Olympic Association remained hopeful of a positive resolution of wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application before the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her failed weigh-in,” read an IOA statement issued on Friday.
Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, Cuba’s wrestler defeated in semifinals by Vinesh replaced her in that top match.
In Tuesday matches Vinesh had been underweight and has therefore requested in her petition to get dual silver together with Lopez
Vinesh was represented by high profile senior counsel Vidushpat Singhania and Harish Salve.
