On Wednesday, the 29-year-old Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was rushed to Paris hospital after being disqualified from women’s 50kg freestyle final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
After weighing in 100 grams more than the weight limit, she was dehydrated and fell unconscious.
Having been disqualified on Tuesday for being overweight by a hundred grams during weigh-in on day two of competition while aiming at the Olympic Gold medal match, Vinesh Phogat is reported recuperating well at Olympic village polyclinic and is said to be in stable condition.
IOA released a statement about declassification of Vinesh Phogat disqualification. Despite team’s best efforts throughout the night Vinesh was weighed in slightly over fifty kilograms on the day of competition. Thus, she will be placed last in this event due to disqualification.
“In regrettable news coming from Indian contingent vineesh phogat who has been disqualified from women wrestling 50 kg class.” However, her weight was up by a few grams over 50 kg this morning despite persistent efforts by her team through out the night. The contingent shall make no additional remarks at present. We request that her privacy be respected by everyone within India’s team as it concerns Vinesh; The statement from IOA stated: “It would like to focus on competitions ahead.”
Following this setback, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called IOA chief PT Usha to discuss possible options available for India. He encouraged PT Usha to look into all possibilities towards supporting vinesh and if it benefits him lodge a strong protest against disqualification which can help the wrestlers.
