The Mekedatu is a canyon, which is deep and narrow Vasan, in the Cauvery River near Kanakapura area of Ramanagara District in Karnataka.
Tamil Manila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, urged the Union Minister of State for Jal Sakthi, V. Somanna to avoid commenting along the the lines that Tamil Nadu and Karnataka should hold talks to resolve the dispute with respect to Karnataka’s plans for the construction of a dam at Mekedatu.
According to Mr. Vasan of TMC(M), who recently teamed up with BJP in Tamil Nadu for Lok Sabha elections, Karnataka has been contemptuous of the Supreme Court and Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA)’s orders.
These steps will have an adverse effect on farmers living in delta districts of Tamil Nadu, he warned adding they were arbitrary”, “unlawful’and ‘against federalism’.
“In such a scenario, Mr. Somanna from Karnataka must keep himself neutral in relation to matters regarding Mekedatu so as to gain confidence from Tamil farmers”, said Vasan.” The Minister should not say that there could be talks between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka about building a dam at Mekedatu.”
