The Indian cricket team arrived on Thursday morning in Delhi after being stranded for a category 4 hurricane, following their T20 World Cup victory in Barbados. The team was welcomed by fans at Indira Gandhi International Airport where they arrived by a special charter flight that was organized by Air India.
The title for the twenty-20 world cup however went to the Rohit Sharma led Indian squad which won the country its second championship and ended an eleven year ICC trophy drought. This win followed tense seven run defeat of South Africa last Saturday in the final.
On Wednesday, at approximately 04:50 am local time, a specially arranged Air India flight designated AIC24WC (Air India Champions 24 World Cup) left Bridgetown, Barbados. It reached Delhi at around 6am IST (Indian Standard Time) on Thursday having flown non-stop for sixteen hours.
Among those who boarded were players’ families and traveling media group members as well as various board officers accompanying them.
Hurricane Beryl forced them to stay back immediately after their victory until things came back to normal thus rendering them unable to return home instantly after winning it.
Upon arrival in Delhi, this squad has been scheduled to visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s house at his residence from 9 am onward.
The team will later fly from Mumbai upon finishing talks with him. They shall be taken through open-bus procession of victory in Mumbai before being felicitated during a ceremony held at Wankhede Stadium.
